Caring for Your Silk Garments
Silk is a naturally breathable fibre that benefits from gentle, infrequent care. Between wears, simply airing your garment can help keep it fresh whilst preserving the beauty, softness and longevity of the fabric.
At Louan, silk is more than a material; it is part of our heritage. Growing up surrounded by silk craftsmanship, our founder Tingting learned that silk responds best to thoughtful handling rather than frequent washing. In her family, garments were often refreshed simply by airing them between wears, allowing the natural qualities of the fabric to remain intact.
Whilst we recommend professional dry cleaning to help preserve the longevity of your garment, silk can also be refreshed at home using traditional methods passed down through generations.
Professional Dry Cleaning
For the best long-term care, we recommend professional dry cleaning, particularly for structured garments, silk blends and tailored pieces. Always refer to the care label inside your garment for any fabric-specific instructions.
Refreshing Silk at Home
If you choose to care for your garment at home, we recommend handling silk with exceptional care.
A traditional method used by Tingting's mother for generations involved washing silk gently in cool water using mild shampoo and conditioner rather than harsh detergents. This gentle approach helps maintain the softness, fluidity and natural lustre of the fabric.
When caring for silk at home:
- Use cool or lukewarm water only
- Choose a mild shampoo, silk wash or delicate cleanser
- Avoid bleach and harsh detergents
- Do not soak for extended periods
- Gently rinse without twisting or wringing the fabric
Drying & Ironing Silk
After washing, gently press excess water from the garment using a clean towel. Avoid twisting the fabric.
- Lay flat or hang to air dry naturally
- Keep away from direct sunlight and heat
- Do not tumble dry
To restore silk's natural fluidity and softness, use a cool iron if needed or lightly steam the garment. Always follow any garment-specific guidance on the care label.
Designed to Last
Silk is a natural fibre that becomes softer and more beautiful with thoughtful care. By handling your garments gently, airing them between wears and following the recommended care instructions, you can preserve their softness, movement and elegance for years to come.
